There are lots of ways to speed up the learning process…and what I mean by speed up the process is that you get the same or better result in less time. Here are some of my favorites.
-
Eliminate the Waste – Waste in education and training is anything that is taught one day and forgotten the next. If it’s still something that’s really important, than you have to find a different way to teach it.
-
Focus on Speed – This may seem odd as a suggestion but the longer it takes to learn something the harder it is to keep the learner motivated. Looking for ways to increase speed actually will increase speed.
-
Blend Hard and Soft Skills – the slow way is to teach hard skills and then soft skills and then try to meld them together. It’s really hard to make good connections this way. Instead teach how to do different tasks and skills that require using both hard and soft skills.
-
Teach in short segments – People tend to remember the first and last parts of any lesson. With short segments, you have more firsts and lasts.
-
Don’t Talk so Much – Often the more your talk the less learning is happening. Others often have to say the words to learn something and they can’t do that when you’re talking.

Intersting post! But what do you think about the new trends in learning? how do you think people learn today- spend more time in trainings and adapt skillset to deliver that task? or quicker ways like using wikis, blogs?
I’m very positive on using new technology to improve training delivery and knowledge management. I’m look for any new ways that people have used.
In a classroom learning environment, this post suits well. Talking too much bores the students. And also speed. Ways have to be devised to capture the attention of learners as too slow a pace will, surprisingly diffuse their learning. However, a suitable is also required as going too fast means “lesson lost”. The learning ability and attention span of the learners has to be monitored as the lesson moves. Adaptibilty by the teachers are therefore a necessary skills nowadays to handle the wider spectrum of learning abilities.
Thanks for the wonderful ideas shared.

Great post! To clarify, what is your definition of hard and soft skills?
I also think that technology, and the differentiation it allows, can be a major factor in enhancing learning. After all, to extend on your first point, waste in education is also all of the time spent teaching topics that some of your students already know. Finding ways to minimize this through differentiation is key.
One of the keys to quality is constant experimentation and testing. Setting up experiments with new technology is a great way to speed things up…and if it doesn’t work, you can move on to try something different or make a slight tweak.
