This picture has nothing to do with the topic but misery loves company.
Anyway, a lot of emphasis is placed on soft skills training. Sometimes referred to as people skills or non-technical skills. This includes things like, listening, presentations, team building, sales, etc. All good skills to have.
The problem is that they take a long time and a lot of practice to master. If you go to a presentations course, you learn about how to make effective presentations and if you’re lucky you get to practice one or two times.
People who make presentations for a living tell me it takes about 200 times through to really make a great presentation. So without that extensive practice what tends to happen is that people think they’ve developed the skills but really haven’t.
Can you learn to be a good listener in 30 minutes? That’s part of a lot of curriculums. I think it might take a little more practice.

Thanks for the posting.
You’re right . A single training session cannot make you a better speaker/presenter – BUT , it can give you the tools to accomplish that. For example , learning how to handle a Question and Answer session and deal with objections is usually something you can use each and every day in your personal and work life to good effect – IF you choose to practice ..
I’d say 40-50 repetitions is enough rather than 200, but either way that is more than the average course attendee will make in the ocurse of several years..
The 200 was a number for those who want to be keynote or motivational speakers. It is a much higher level than most people need. My experience is that most teachers and trainers overestimate the amount of skills training or level of proficiency you can do in a one, two or three day class.
Mr. Fernando Alejandro wrote a very interesting post but think about this if people really go with a negative attitude it would never help. Soft skills training programs instruct people on how to interact with each other in the workplace. Companies work best when people work together smoothly as a team. While some people may have innate social skills, most of us learn these skills through practice. Softskills training is very important not only to succeed in an organsization but also in your daily life as it explains interpersonal skills, social grace and behavioural traits such as attitude, motivation and time management.Iam sure you cannot learn everything in 30 min but anu knowledge never goes waste.
