I’ve written a lot about the downsides of sink or swim learning.  However, I came across this video and I found it mesmerizing.  Enjoy!

I just got back from a business trip and the last restuarant served something that made me deathly ill.  It was acutally just a salad.  I guess it can be a little dicey eating anything that isn’t cooked.

I’ve been watching some of the cooking reality shows which have become a new spectator sport.  While the food looks great, it makes you worry everytime you eat in a restaurant.  What gets me the most is that they do most of their prep and finishing work with their hands.  Not very sanitary.

My favorite has been watching Kitchen Nightmares.  However, in most of the kitchens their growing all sorts of mold and weird things.  The whole restaurant as gone past the freshness date.  The other thing that’s an upsetting trend is when the restaurant buys frozen food and the microwaves it.

I see a lot of blogs that are very heavy text often just one long paragraph.  While content is king, you have to do something to attract and keep people’s attention.

Here’s a couple of things I’ve done to try an make my site more readable.

  1. I start with an idea and then go look for a picture that expresses the idea.  In this post, I just wanted a picture to grab your attention.  Nothing like a dog with three balls in his month.
  2. Then I try to get across my point in a series of very short paragraphs.
  3. I try to keep my post to something that you can read in just a few minutes.  If I have more to say, I can always write another post.  Also if you exhaust a topic, what are you going to write about tomorrow.
  4. Keep to your theme but don’t be too predictable.  This blog is about learning so I always try to connect it in some way, but the range of topics is fairly broad.
  5. I also prefer a narrative style so it sounds like I’m having a conversation with the reader.

While everyone wants to quote Shakespere, Plato and Nietzsche here’s some quotes from the real philosophers of our time.

Yogi Berra..

  • “A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.”
  • “Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical”
  • I always thought that record would stand until it was broken.
  • “I never said most of the things I said”
  • “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded”
  • “There are some people who, if they don’t already know, you can’t tell ’em.”
  • “You can observe a lot by just watching.”

Gracie Allen…

  • “Brains, integrity, and force may be all very well, but what you need today is Charm. Go ahead and work on your economic programs if you want to, I’ll develop my radio personality.”
  • “The President of today is just the postage stamp of tomorrow.”
  • “This used to be a government of checks and balances. Now it’s all checks and no balances.”
  • “When I was born I was so surprised I didn’t talk for a year and a half.”
  • “Smartness runs in my family. When I went to school I was so smart my teacher was in my class for five years”

Casey Stengel

  • “All right everyone, line up alphabetically according to your height. “
  • “Don’t cut my throat, I may want to do that later myself.”
  • “Never make predictions, especially about the future”
  • “The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided.”
  • “There comes a time in every man’s life, and I’ve had plenty of them”

Groucho Marx

  • ” A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere. “
  • “From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down, I convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend on reading it. “
  • “I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book. “
  • “I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception.”
  • I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn’t it.”

I think this is a much more realistic show.  Why don’t we see things more like this.  Leadership in action.

The second risk is how his kids are going to look.  In past shows, they were somewhat contemporaries to the contestants.  These contestants are much more successful and confident.  Let’s see if they’re protected in anyone.  Well those are my thoughts.  Not a big earth shatterning event.
